The Gadsden Center received this email from Howell School Board Trustee Deborah McCormick regarding transgender issues in the Howell Public School District. Unfortunately, it was received too late to post prior to the June 13th school board meeting referenced below. However, we are posting this message to inform you of the situation and too make you aware of the dates of future Howell School Board meetings.
The link to the Howell School Board website provides the dates and location of future meetings. It also includes agendas for upcoming meetings. We also included a link to a recent article published by the Livingston Daily on this topic.
Please pass this along to everyone! I am a trustee on the Howell School Board. On May 13, 2016 Mr. Obama has with a stroke of a pen directed all public schools across the country to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that match with their gender identity rather than their biological gender. The guidance threatens that the Administration may cut federal funding or file suit against any school that fails to comply. This directive is yet another clear abuse of power by Mr. Obama. A decision like this, involving millions of children, should be left to parents and teachers, not Washington bureaucrats. As of late we have had a situation within the Howell Schools at the elementary level as I am sure you know based on the Front page of the Argus and the TV news reports.
The Tenth Amendment provides that " the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or the people".
I am concerned that this guidance not only violates the the balance of power between the federal and state government but more importantly violates the sacred bond between parent and child.
Therefore I encourage anyone who disagrees with this course of action to attend the Howell School Board Meeting Monday June 13, 2016 at 7:00 and let your opinion be heard. We are blazing a trail on this issue in Michigan and need to stand up for what is right for every parent and child!
Sincerely,
Deborah McCormick
Howell School Board Trustee
