Taxes Going Up - Again

The gas price gap is getting even wider . . . Traveling to Tennessee every week for business has provided an opportunity to compare costs of living with my home state of Michigan. I filled up my rental car with BP gas at the price of $1.76.9 per gallon. Driving home from Detroit Metro Airport I had to fill up my own car. The price of BP gas in Hartland Michigan was $2.59.9 per gallon. (October 23, 2015 comparison)

This gap coulld get even wider as the Michigan State House of Representatives voted to raise gas taxes this week. It appears that Michigan's establishment Republicans want to wrestle the the "tax and spend" mantle from Michigan Democrats.

Platform Republican Caucus Survey Finds Strong Opposition to Gas Tax, Registration Fee Increases

Pinckney, Mich. – The Platform Republican Caucus, a grassroots citizen group, released the results of a poll today that show strong opposition to gas tax or registration fee increases. Legislative leaders hope to vote as soon as today on a package that would hike gas taxes by hundreds of millions of dollars. “The data is clear, voters don’t support tax hikes and they aren’t likely to support legislators who support tax hikes or registration fee hikes either,” said Jennifer Hensley, founder of the Platform Republican Caucus. “Raising taxes just doesn’t seem like something citizens are willing to overlook even if the roads are bad.”

The Gadsden Center supports the road funding plan put forward by State Senator Patrick Colbeck. It is a workable plan which fixes Michigan's roads without raising taxes on working families or businesses.

The Livonia Chamber of Commerce recently came out in support of 33% increase in property taxes used to fund Schoolcraft College. Meanwhile, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce has come out in support of a middle-class tax hike for road funding. Why does the Chamber lobby for tax hikes on individuals while they lobby vigorously to keep theirs from going up?

In spite of Michigan's high gas prices, establishment politicians and lobbyists for the Michigan Chamber of Commerce want to raise your gas taxes to fund road maintenance.

The Gadsden Center was busy educating voters at the Republican Conference on Mackinac Island. The Center published and distributed an informational flyer to conference attendees. The flyer created quite a stir as it highlighted the voting record of State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker.
